History:
The brutal hate crime murder of Matthew Shepard motivated local activists to engage the region’s largest and most respected faith-based social service agencies to discuss the need for support, encouragement and education on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
James H. Bryson, Episcopal Community Services of Philadelphia (ECS), Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia (JFCS), and Lutheran Children and Family Service (LCFS) came together with a small group of other community activists in a spirit of justice, compassion, and concern for the well being of all young people.
United in common outrage over the murder of Matthew Shepard, these activists committed themselves to a mission that would positively impact the lives of youth. This group, with The Attic Youth Center, developed The James H. Bryson Institute of The Attic Youth Center. Since the fall of 2001, The Institute has provided programs designed to support youth development by educating institutions about sexual and gender diversity.
